HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK?

I usually refer to my work as photo-illustration mostly because my images are created entirely with photographs but I really try to make them look more like drawings or illustrations.

WHEN DID YOU START CREATING ART USING PHOTOSHOP AND WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT IT?

I have been using photoshop since version 5 which was a while ago now but my current body of work was created in the last 5 years.
I was attracted to the program because I realized early on that it was going to be nearly as important to me as a camera.

WAS THERE ANY PARTICULAR STYLE OR ARTIST YOU WERE DRAWN TO OR INSPIRED BY?

As far as photography goes my three favorites would be Phillip Dixon. He has inspired me for nearly 20 years. More recently I would have to say the work of Eugenio Recuenco from Spain was pretty mind altering. I also love the work of Javier Vallhonrat who is also from there.
For my photo-illustration work I would say I am inspired by, although not directly influenced by, amazing artists like Lori Earley, Mark Ryden, Luis Royo, Ray Caesar, James Jean. I recently discovered a great painter from San Francisco named Michael Page.
A while back I saw the work of a sculpture named Kris Kuksi that pretty much left me in awe. I'm also inspired a lot by cinema.

HOW DO YOU START ON A PARTICULAR PROJECT? WHAT DO YOU BEGIN WITH?

I always start with the main image which is usually a person. I then find the first textural image that I think works with it. I just keep adding and subtracting until the image tells me its done or until 6 to 12 hours have past!
Of course, thats the simplified version but the method is almost always the same. I do not pre-plan at all. Usually about half way through something starts to take shape and I head in a that direction. The closer I get to the end of a piece the more crucial the decision making becomes.
If I do a commissioned piece that's a different story and a bit different approach. Generally not as much fun but creatively rewarding none the less.

WHAT TOOL OR TOOLS IN PHOTOSHOP DO YOU USE THE MOST? ANY TOP PHOTOSHOP TIPS?

I can't work effectively in photoshop without a wacom tablet.
My top tip would be to learn the pen tool.

WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU PASS ONTO OUR READERS FOR USING PHOTOSHOP TO CREATE ART?

The three most important things for me to create in photoshop are the pen and the brush tools. The blend modes also changed my entire creative method. I do however think they need a couple more. Not sure what or how they might function, but it just seems like something is missing.

WHAT WAS YOUR LAST COMMISSION?

I am currently working on some new pieces to submit to Spectrum 17. www.spectrumfantasticart.com/
I have completed one and would like to have two more done by the submission deadline which is in january.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE VIEW/BUY YOUR WORK?

Below are the sites where my work can be viewed. At the moment I would have to be contacted directly for purchase enquires.
